I found this wooden figure of a mandarin in a warehouse in Zhejiang province. He is from the city of Ningxia and was made in about 1850. He sits proudly wearing his mandarin had and his robe with its central mandarin square. The mandarin square indicated his rank. The bird on the rank badge indicates that he was a civil official. Much of the original pigment remains, as does his wonderful mustache made of real hair.
