This porcelain piece was used for grinding sticks of dry ink. Water was added to produce liquid ink for calligraphy. Our fairly rare piece is porcelain painted in an under glaze cobalt blue. It was made in Jingdezhen, a famous porcelain center, around 1720. It measures about 4” in diameter.
